At Bell Gardens assisted living home the Alzheimer's residents claim a nocturnal parasitic alien creature is responsible for the recent surge in deaths on the second floor. No one believes them, except a newly employed nurse ALICE. An Iraq war veteran and single mother with troubles of her own. There to work at the run down facility because she carries a secret motivation: to cultivate a relationship with her long time, estranged grandfather, WILEY ST. JOHN who is also a Vet. and a healthy first floor resident.
When Alice is unexpectedly transferred upstairs, away from both her grandfather and her charming coworker SEAMUS, she meets the new eccentric Alzheimer's patient MATTY MARKESS, who claims to have unknowingly brought the creature with him when he moved into Bell Gardens. MATTY attempts to prove creature’s existence and when Alice is the first of full mind, to catch a glimpse of the thing, she is reluctant to believe because of her extreme PTSD meds.
As she strives to dig deeper into the mystery of St. John’s past, her responsibilities at home to her young son become harder to balance. Meanwhile the attacks from the creature on the second floor residents become stronger and more bold. When Alice witnesses the creature murdering Matty and threatening to slip downstairs, she urgently moves to prove its existence. Discovering its weakness for cold, Alice dumps a senior resident into an ice bath. Everyone thinks she’s a paranoid drug addict, but when the creature evacuates its host, the danger is suddenly real. Angered by its exposure, the alien thing reveals its occupation, for every senior, save for a small group Alice has nurtured on the first floor, is a creature controlled host. Dashing for cover, it is her newly reunited grandfather Wiley St. John, who sacrifices himself to defeat the creature. A sacrifice, that redeems his dark past, and helps Alice to learn how to be a better parent.
